Museum of Wat Mani Wanaram
Wat Mani Wanaram is a famous temple in Ubon Ratchathani province that plays an important part in Thai history and Buddhist art. The temple was established around the reign of King Rama III. At the time, the abbot of the temple was Phra Ariyawongsajarn Yannawimol Ubonsankhapamok (Sui). Having a keen knowledge and wisdom in Buddhist art, he applied Buddhist architecture style to the construction of the monastic residence, Kuti Phra Ariyawongsajarn or “Kuti Deang (the Red Residence)” of Wat Mani Wanaram, Hor Phra Bhuddabhat and Hor Trai of Wat Tung Sri Muang. In addition, Phra Ariyawongsajarn originated the idea of making the temple a center of worldly and moral knowledge, as well as the cultural heritage and wisdom of Ubon Ratchathani. This is the original purpose of Museum of Wat Mani Wanaram. The museum has become a learning center of cultural heritage and wisdom of Buddhist art of Ubon Ratchathani. The temple contains three historic residences that portray the architectural styles of Buddhist art including Kuti Phra Aryawonsajarn (Red Residence), Kuti Dharmarato, and Guti Yai. These three residences are used as the learning center of the temple’s history, the Sri Muang community of Ubon Ratchathani, and as a biography of highly-respected monks. They are also used to exhibit Buddhist art, including ancient artifacts, ancient artworks, ancient manuscripts and old photos. This article aims at showing the importance of the Museum of Wat Mani Wararam as a source of cultural heritage and wisdom of Buddhist art of Ubon Ratchathani in order to preserve the Buddhist art heritage that dates back over 100 years.
