This paper explores the Nemiraja Jataka and its operatic adaptation, Chariot of Heaven, by Distinguished Silpathorn Artist Somtow Sucharitkul. The paper discusses how Chariot of Heaven, the fourth episode in Somtow’s ten-part Dasajati music drama cycle, is interpreted and translated into an opera-ballet by the composer/director. Each scene shall be shown and examined textually, musically and visually, both from an academic and from a performance point of view. This opera-ballet not only provides a reinterpretation of traditional Buddhist cosmology and the law of karma, but also attempts to convey to the audience the Jataka’s central themes regarding kingship, renunciation and the perfection of resolve (อธิษฐานบารมี).
