Mor Lam Klon (traditional Isan folk performance) uses Isan song lyrics with both worldly and Dharma subject matter in order to communicate and instruct the audience. The other roles of Mor Lam Klon are to instruct and create social and moral awareness. The subject matters of Mor Lam Klon can develop the audience’s mind in that they help the audience gain an insight into worldly life and Dharma wisdom. Generally, Mor Lam Klon includes two subject matters: the worldly life and Dharma wisdom. The worldly life themes typically include historical lyrics, rural life of Isan farmers, drought, courtship, Lham Loang Khong, and Ruan Sam Nam Si. The Dharma song lyrics commonly include the Dhammada Sorn Loke (teachings of the Buddha), Dhamma Puzzles (questions and answers about Dharma principles), the five precepts (sila / the five precepts of Buddhism), morals, Jataka Tales, and the biography of the Buddha. Nowadays, the worth of Mor Lam Klon is overlooked because of the impact of social changes in modern Thai society. To survive against such social forces, Mor Lam Klon needs to adapt. Accordingly, Mor Lam Klon has developed new subject matter and has modernized the performance style. It is apparent that the modern Mor Lam Klon presents less didactic content in more appealing and entertaining style in order to conform to the current trend and for the survival of Mo Lam Klon groups.
